Happy Families

As I pass by happy families
parents, children, strolling by
I wonder if beneath are stories
of more than just what meets the eye
that look, that glance, that glimpse of interest
I know they wonder, same as I

and is the truth so hard to bear
what's behind the surface stories
and if he really doesn't care
are we playing happy families
are we playing happy families
are we playing happy families

he texts all night out on the couch
comes to bed when you're asleep
he says it's just a friend who needs him
does he not realise your need
does he know how much it cost
does he know how much he's lost

and oh! the sea of faces drift
families doing the family thing
did life show up how they planned it
when did love begin to sting
when did life get so damn tough
that love just wasn't good enough

does he know you lie awake
counting off the things to do
longing leaves you grasping blindly
there's no one else to turn to
a look, a glance, a touch forgotten
alll that's left, next generation
