this city slicker spent last weekend at a farm
in Amish and Mennonite territory in Wisconsin
the earth was either iced or covered in snow
with temperatures a few degrees below
wind swirls gustingly
rain is dumped in torrents
clouds peer in blackly
sound and light show off
but three of us inside
mum, dad, son, so cosy
everything life can provide
here and now with family
Good night my baby Joshua
angels watch over you
your mom and daddy love you so
and the whole world too
Car stops at light
sliver of white
wafts past the window
is that smoke
or is it steam
or dust from the road?
My dad was a character
who drew people
like no other.
Unendingly curious,
convincingly theatrical
irrepressibly irreverent;
he had the most fun
with his own foibles.
Centre and surrounding
Embueing and embracing
Protector and protected
In step, yet sometimes conflicted
In me and without me
Capturing and setting free
Creating meaning in my world
My tribe, my family
You with the huge chihuahua eyes
the dance in them like summer wind
lashes long, at least an inch
your cheeky smile and toothy grin
What should have been fun
was instead rained upon
Independence Day fireworks
fizzled out by a thunderstorm
Terminal 2F at Charles de Gaulle Paris was evacuated today
Cancelling our flight out of Bordeaux
And forcing us to stay
the night
2F has been aptly named
As it has indeed effed us twice
The child is precocious
Attempting to open a coconut cream can
That would present a challenge to a grown man
The opener slipped
Nearly lopping off a tiny tip
Of his left thumb
it seems like eons and
constellations away
when we had dinner
at that little Greek place,
Bacchus;
the one where
we bought plates
at 5 bucks a pop and
flung them against the wall
this frequent traveler must find some fun
from hours of time in lonely room
breakfast in bed is best of all
eggs and bacon, coffee on call
dear human pets
i speak for myself and my sibling
when i say
thank you very much
for taking us in
i wish however
you didn't keep our litter box
in your living room
dear human pets
thank you for listening and moving our litter box to a more discreet environment we were really getting traumatised but have since bounced back with our natural resilience
